Look after those baby teeth
Your child’s baby (primary) teeth are important. Although they will be replaced by adult teeth, it’s essential your child learns to care for them. And it’s essential they develop the habit of good oral care, learning to brush their teeth morning and night. We also want to avoid cavities in baby teeth. If they lose their baby teeth prematurely, the teeth can no longer act as space savers, so alignment problems can develop in the adult teeth.
Regular dental checkups are essential for kids to keep them cavity-free. Childhood cavities are on the rise but the situation can be avoidable with good home habits and regular visits.
Regular dental checkup & clean appointments include:
- Examination
- Scale, clean and polish
- Fluoride treatment
- Protective sealants to prevent the likelihood of cavities
- Oral hygiene instructions
- Ongoing dental health education
Your baby’s first dental visit
Give your kids the best start! As recommended by the Australian Dental Association, Your child should have the first-ever checkup at around 12 months of age or after the first tooth has erupted – whichever happens first. Although you may think there’s not much to do if your child doesn’t have many teeth, still, a lot can be achieved. For example, we’ll discuss:
- teething
- oral care and brushing techniques
- habits such as thumb sucking
- preventing traumatic injuries
- tooth decay, and how to avoid it
- nutritional advice – and what food/drinks to avoid
